The district of Guerrero is particularly rich in its variety of masks. These masks vary a great deal from locale to locale. This richness has itself created considerable confusion for those interested in the functions of masks. In Guerrero, several masks are now made and sold that purport to be dance masks used in local rituals and entertainments of remote villages. Frequently, these masks, though made by local artisans of considerable skill and based on regional motifs, are in fact invented for the commercial markets.
